thenga story

Coconut shell homeware

Thenga Story. From shell to heirloom.

Hand-turned bowls, cups and homeware from wasted coconut shell, made by artisan families in Pollachi.

  • Wasted shell
  • Pollachi, Tamil Nadu
  • 9 artisan families
The Thenga Story range laid out on a table: goblets, breakfast bowls, cups, lamps, a soap dispenser and an incense holder, every one turned from a coconut shell.

One · The Tree

Every coconut has a story.

Ours begin in the coconut-growing regions of South India.

Two · The Letting Go

When it is ready, the tree lets it go.

Three · The Fall

From nature to everyday living.

This is the journey of one shell.

Four · What’s Left

The water and flesh are taken away.

We believe its story shouldn’t end there.

Five · The Idea

What was once considered waste.

Thenga Story was born from a simple idea: to transform discarded coconut shells into beautiful, functional products that bring nature into everyday life.

Six · The Choosing

Each shell is carefully selected.

Then cleaned, shaped, polished and handcrafted by skilled artisans.

Seven · The Making

Traditional craftsmanship. Careful finishing.

And a deep respect for nature.

Eight · Handover

No two pieces are exactly alike.

The natural texture, grain, curves and subtle variations of every coconut shell make each product beautifully individual.

Handcrafted with care and made to be enjoyed for years.

Tea cups, coffee cups, juice cups, breakfast bowls, soap trays, soap dispensers, kitchenware, home décor and more.

From the palm to your table. Read it at your own pace.

The process

From shell to something new.

No machine mould, no two alike. Watch a single discarded shell become something built to keep.

  1. 1

    Harvested

Shells are collected as a byproduct of coconut farming around Pollachi. Nothing is grown or felled for this alone.

  2. 2

    Shaped by hand

Each shell is cut and turned by artisans, no two pieces coming out quite the same.

  3. 3

    Sanded & sealed

Sanded smooth in stages, then sealed with a food-safe natural finish that brings out the grain.

  4. 4

    Finished piece

What was once discarded becomes a bowl, cup, or keepsake, ready for a home of its own.
